About us

SignBit exists to make the safest way to hold Bitcoin the easiest way to hold it.

The problem that never went away

Bitcoin has had a custody problem since the day it was invented. What makes Bitcoin different from every other asset is that nobody can take it from you. Not a bank, not a court, not the most powerful government on earth. That property is the whole point. It is also the part that is hardest to actually use.

Holding your own keys is not easy. For most of Bitcoin's history it was a job for people who were comfortable with the technical detail. If that was not you, your options were to hand your coins to an exchange or a custodian, or to turn something weightless and digital into a physical object you now have to hide and protect. Both of those trade one risk for another.

Neither option is safe enough

Give your Bitcoin to a third party and you are trusting a company to stay solvent, stay honest, and stay in business. Keep it entirely on your own and a single lost device, a fire, or a mistake made once is final. Nobody is coming to reverse it.

There is a newer risk too, and it is not theoretical. As Bitcoin has become more valuable, people who hold it have become targets. There have been real cases of theft, break-ins, and violence aimed at individuals known to own it. A single key in a single place, guarded by a single person, is a design that puts that person in the middle of the problem.

Why we built SignBit

Multisig is the honest answer. Instead of one key that can move everything, your Bitcoin sits behind several independent keys, and more than one of them has to agree before a single satoshi moves. Lose one and you have not lost your money. Have one taken and the thief still has nothing. There is no single person to pressure, because there is no single key that is enough.

This is not new, and it is not our invention. It has been the right answer for years. The reason most people do not use it is that the tools were built for institutions. They are expensive. They ask you to prove who you are before you can protect what is yours. Many of them will not serve you at all depending on where you happen to live. And almost all of them are difficult enough that people give up somewhere in the middle and go back to what they were doing before.

So we built SignBit: multisig you can set up and understand in an afternoon, free to start, affordable if you need more, and open to people wherever they are. You hold your keys. We hold one only if you want us to, and it is never enough to move your money on its own.

What we hold ourselves to

We can never move your Bitcoin alone. That is not a policy we could quietly change. It is the arithmetic of the vault you create, and it stays true whatever happens to us.

You can always leave. Your vault is built on open Bitcoin standards, and we publish a guide showing how to recover and spend from it using ordinary open-source tools, without SignBit involved at all. A safety net you cannot walk away from is not a safety net.

We tell you what is true. If something is not built yet, we say so rather than describing a plan in the present tense. Security is a claim that is worth exactly as much as its honesty.

Our mission

Bitcoin only keeps its promise if ordinary people can hold it safely without becoming security experts first. Making that possible, for a first-time buyer, for a family planning decades ahead, for anyone anywhere in the world, is what we are here to do.
